Can you use a Sprint phone today? Often yes, but never on Sprint. T-Mobile switched both Sprint networks off in 2022, so an old Sprint phone only works if another network accepts it. Whether it does comes down to two things: the phone is unlocked, and the new carrier’s checker says it is compatible.

Everything below was read from each company’s own pages on October 9, 2026.

Why a Sprint phone cannot use Sprint

There is no Sprint network left. T-Mobile’s network evolution page gives the dates.

NetworkWhat T-Mobile says
Sprint 3G, which used CDMA“As of March 31, 2022, Sprint’s older 3G (CDMA) network has been retired.”
Sprint LTE“As of June 30, 2022, Sprint’s LTE network has been retired.”

The same page warns about age in general. Phones “typically introduced in 2017 or earlier, may still support voice calls and basic texting but could experience service disruptions”.

Using a Sprint phone on T-Mobile

This is the likeliest fit, since Sprint’s customers went there. A T-Mobile page for business accounts says: “Most Sprint devices, including handsets and non-handsets, are compatible with T-Mobile’s network and can continue to be used if you replace your Sprint SIM with a FREE T-Mobile SIM card. However, some devices are not compatible with T-Mobile’s network and must be replaced”.

For your own phone, use the checker on T-Mobile’s bring your own phone page: “Enter your IMEI into the checker below to quickly see if your phone is compatible with the T-Mobile network”.

Using a Sprint phone on another carrier

No carrier’s page mentions Sprint phones by name. Each gives a general rule, and each has a checker.

CarrierWhat its bring-your-own-phone page says
Verizon“Make sure your device is unlocked from your previous carrier.” The SIM “must also be compatible with the Verizon mobile network.”
AT&T“your phone must be GSM-compatible. CDMA phones will not work.”
Boost Mobile“enter your IMEI number in the field below to see if your phone is compatible with Boost”, and “make sure it’s unlocked by your current carrier.”
Mint Mobile“you can definitely bring your current phone to Mint Mobile as long as it’s unlocked and compatible.”
US Mobile“Any unlocked phone or device that has a SIM card slot or is eSIM capable will most likely work with our services.”

AT&T’s line matters for older Sprint phones. Sprint’s 3G network was CDMA, and AT&T says CDMA phones will not work. AT&T’s page does not say more about Sprint phones than that, so use its checker for a newer one.

US Cellular is no longer an option. Its wireless business now belongs to T-Mobile.

How to find your IMEI

The IMEI is the number a compatibility checker asks for. Mint Mobile’s help page notes it “can be found by dialing *#06#”.

The phone has to be unlocked

A phone bought from Sprint was probably locked to it. The FCC puts it this way: “Unless a phone, or other wireless device, is specifically sold as “unlocked” at the point of purchase, it is probably locked to a specific wireless provider’s network.”

Unlocking should not cost anything. The FCC says participating carriers “agreed not to charge existing or former customers additional fees to unlock a device if it is eligible to be unlocked.”

Who unlocks a Sprint phone now is less clear. T-Mobile’s unlock policy does not mention Sprint. It says “The device must be sold by T-Mobile”, and for other phones, “you need to contact the mobile carrier or manufacturer who sold you the device.” Sprint is part of T-Mobile, so T-Mobile is the place to ask, but we found no page where it says how Sprint-bought phones are handled.

Questions

Can a Sprint phone be used on Boost Mobile?

Boost’s page does not say. Boost was a Sprint brand once, but it now runs mainly on AT&T’s towers, so do not assume. Put the IMEI into Boost’s checker.

Does a Sprint SIM card still work?

No Sprint network remains for it to connect to. T-Mobile’s page for business accounts says the Sprint SIM has to be replaced with a T-Mobile one.

What settings does a former Sprint phone need?

They are on our Sprint APN settings page.

The story of the merger is on our main Sprint page.
