Virgin Mobile plans have not been sold in the United States since January 2020. Virgin Mobile USA was a prepaid brand owned by Sprint that ran on Sprint’s network. Sprint closed it and moved its customers to Boost Mobile, its other prepaid brand at the time.
This page is about Virgin Mobile USA. Virgin Mobile brands in other countries are separate companies.
What happened to Virgin Mobile USA
Its own website announced it. An archived copy from January 15, 2020 opens with “Virgin Mobile USA is migrating to Boost Mobile!” and continues: “As of 1/09/20 Virgin Mobile USA no longer offers online sales to new customers, however you can still activate your new phone using the link below through 02/07/20.”
You can read that page in the Internet Archive.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 9, 2020 | Online sales to new customers end |
| February 2020 | Accounts are moved to Boost Mobile |
| February 7, 2020 | Last day to activate a new Virgin Mobile phone |
Sprint’s statement at the time, as reported by Stop the Cap, was that “Beginning on the week of Feb. 2, we will be moving Virgin Mobile customer accounts to our sister brand Boost Mobile”.
By January 2021 the address virginmobileusa.com redirected to a Boost Mobile welcome page. Today it does not load at all.
Where the service is now
It did not stay with Sprint. Sprint merged into T-Mobile on April 1, 2020, two months after the Virgin Mobile move. Boost Mobile did not go with it. Boost is now owned by EchoStar, and EchoStar says Boost customers connect mainly through AT&T’s towers.
So a line that started on Virgin Mobile, and was never moved elsewhere by its owner, is a Boost Mobile line today. Current Boost plans are on our Boost Mobile page. The story of the network it once used is on our Sprint page.

Virgin Mobile did not let you bring a phone from another carrier. You had to buy a Virgin Mobile phone, sold at Sprint stores and large retailers.
What customers were told about their phones, plans and payments, and how to pay today, is on our page about the move from Virgin Mobile to Boost.
Questions people still ask
Can I still log in to my Virgin Mobile account?
No. The Virgin Mobile USA website is gone. If your line was moved in 2020, it became a Boost Mobile account, and Boost is who to contact.
Does a Virgin Mobile phone still work?
A Virgin Mobile phone was built for Sprint’s network, and T-Mobile says Sprint’s 3G network was retired on March 31, 2022 and its LTE network on June 30, 2022. Ask Boost Mobile whether a specific phone can be activated today.
