Free Cell Phones for Seniors – Is it really true?

It’s still unknown how come people keep searching for “free cell phones for seniors”.

There is no US network carrier currently allowing such a service. Even if you show your AARP card you are not going to more minutes or features or free phones.

Every cell phone manufactured after 1998 is required to place free, unlimited calls to 911 with or without service. So any phone with a charge will be able to dial 911, even with no service.

Taking into account the safety and security, many local programs in counties and cities started offering second-hand cell phones with no minutes, but are still 911-operable for emergencies for the senior citizens. They collected old cell phones and distributed it to the senior citizens for free making them feel that they can call 911 anytime and anywhere regardless to which network they are connected.

Apart from this, whatever your age, senior citizen or not, in order to get a free government cell phone (and up to 250 minutes airtime a month) you should be qualify either by your low-income status or current participation in another public assistance program like food stamps, Medicaid, SSI, public housing and others.
