Straight Talk vs Net10 used to be a close call between two brands from the same company. Today only one of them is selling. Net10’s website lists no plans, takes activations by phone only, and shows visitors a notice that reads “Standby while we switch you to SIMPLE Mobile”. Straight Talk is still open, with plans from $25 to $65 a month.

Both brands belong to Verizon. Each site says so in its footer.

If you are choosing a new plan

Net10 is not an option. Compare Straight Talk with the brand Net10 itself recommends, Simple Mobile, which is also Verizon’s. Simple Mobile’s smartphone plans run from $25 a month for 15 GB to $60 a month for its top unlimited plan. Straight Talk’s are on our Straight Talk page.

Straight Talk’s cheapest unlimited plan, at $25, is only for people who bring their own phone. Its Silver Unlimited plan is $45 for anyone, or $30 a month if you pay $360 for a year.

If you are on Net10 now

Your line works until Net10 tells you it will not. Net10’s site still lets existing customers add airtime and manage Auto-Refill, and it gives a hotline “for migration assistance”, 866-667-6437.

You do not have to go where Net10 points. You can move your number to Straight Talk or to any other carrier. Do it while the Net10 line is still active.

More on Net10’s status is on our Net10 page, and how to get its settings on our Net10 APN settings page.

How the two compared in 2017

This site first compared them in December 2017, when both belonged to Tracfone’s parent company and both sold plans. These were Net10’s prices then.

Archive: 2017

Net10 family plans, 30 days, unlimited talk, text and data:

LinesPriceWith Auto-Refill
2$90$85
3$130$125
4$170$165

Net10 pay as you go:

AirtimePriceService days
200 minutes$2030
300 minutes$3060
600 minutes$4560
900 minutes$6090
1,500 minutes$100180

Our verdict then was that the two were “almost identical” in coverage and policies, and differed mainly in where you could buy them. That part aged well. They were the same company’s brands, and the company has now kept one.
